Encountering in indigenous culture curriculum design
Wednesday the 09th of November 2016, my professor, three classmates and me, as a team from Social design course, went to Zuozhen elementary school. The aim was to meet the teachers and share some experiences about teaching. It was amazing.
By13:30 pm everyone got seats and began the activity. First the professor asked a self-introduction to the public, the teachers around 6 and us. Then, the teachers share the experiences of the activities they have already done this semester with the kids. Most of them related to Siraya culture. Some interesting activities like food, siraya language learning, acting races, dancing and so forth. All in such purpose to create an environment for pupils to learn and enjoy at the same time. We believe that is the best approach to teach children. The professor also shared the different types of teacher we can be towards our students (friendship or mothership teacher, the one as reference who is always strict to students but also some teachers who teach with books and others without, all in his head). The idea was the types of students, younger or older, the situation, we have different approach of teaching that has to match with and therefore should be adopted.
Another part of the activity was a kind of workshop we did: we were didvided in 3 small groups and each one had a specific topic, like mine was the integration of both English and Siraya language in kids learning program activities. One else was to make Siraya traditional food. That was great moments of reflection and sharing experiences. Of course I could not participate that actively, because of less experiences and language barrier but mostly I enjoyed listening to them. Some nice propositions have been done and I think at the end of the activity, everyone, not only the teachers but also us, students and the professor herself, have returned home with a package of knowledge, new ideas and great experiences that will, in a manner or another, change our future views or perceptions of life.
A group photo with all of the children, a great way to end the first day
